Exploring the Many Wonders of Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden

Nestled on Staten Island’s North Shore lies one of New York City’s most treasured landmarks, the Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden. Founded in the 1800s, the 83-acre site was originally built as a haven for retired sailors and is now home to a plethora of attractions, including 26 gardens, visual and performing arts spaces, museums, and more.

If you’re seeking a day trip or weekend getaway, Snug Harbor is a unique and beautiful destination offering something for everyone. Here are just a few of the many wonders you can explore:

The Chinese Scholar’s Garden
Step inside a 16th-century-style Chinese garden and be transported to another world. Designed by landscape architects and artisans from China, the garden features meandering paths, a Bamboo Forest of Tranquility, a water pavilion, and a rockery modeled after one in Shanghai. This is truly a place to immerse yourself in Chinese culture and history.

The New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden is open Thursday through Sunday from April through November.

Heritage Farm
Have you ever wondered what farming was like in the 1800s? At Snug Harbor, you can step back in time at the Heritage Farm. Discover a variety of farm animals, crops, and gardens, as well as historic buildings like a circa-1840s farmhouse, a blacksmith’s shop, and a haying barn. Visitors can experience what it was like to be a farmer in the 19th century through hands-on activities, including candle making, butter churning, and more.

The New York Heritage Farm is open Thursday through Sunday from May through October.

The Noble Maritime Collection
Snug Harbor is also home to the Noble Maritime Collection, which includes paintings, prints, and artifacts from the life and work of artist John A. Noble, who spent much of his life documenting the maritime history of New York City. The Museum is located in The Sailors’ Snug Harbor’s (1833) former Marine Hospital ward, which also includes galleries and special exhibitions.

The Noble Maritime Collection offers year-round public programming, including lectures, classes, and workshops.

The Music Hall
The Music Hall is Snug Harbor’s state-of-the-art performance venue, offering exceptional acoustics, seating up to 800 guests, and a stage hosting musicians, dancers, and performance companies from around the world.

Check out the calendar to see upcoming shows, some of which are offered as outdoor events during the summer months.
