Anxiety is a common experience that arises from time to time in all of our lives. Whether it is a concern about a future event, a worry about a past occurrence, or a general feeling of unease, anxiety can be debilitating and cause significant distress. In some cases, anxiety can result in difficulty with sleeping, concentrating, making decisions, and relationships.

Fortunately, mindfulness practice can help you to manage your anxiety in a healthy way. Here are some tips to adopt a mindful approach to overcoming anxiety:

1. Pay attention to your thoughts and reactions:
Notice the thoughts that provoke your anxiety. You might try to label them or just observe them. The goal is not to get rid of these thoughts but to simply accept them as they are. Equally, notice how your body reacts to your anxious thoughts. Try to channel your focus on your breathing, deliberately slowing it down to calm yourself down.

2. Observe the present moment:
Bring your focus on the present moment by engaging your senses. What do you see, hear, feel, or smell right now? It’s important to do this without any judgement or analysis as it can shift your attention to simple sensory experiences that are not anxiety-provoking.

3. Practice Gratitude:
Anxiety may stem from focusing on potential negative outcomes, so it can be helpful to reflect on what you have in the present moment. This may include your health, your relationships, your job, or something else you are grateful for. Try keeping a gratitude journal and jot down at least five things every day to remind yourself that you have much to appreciate in your life.

4. Cultivate self-compassion:
When anxiety strikes, try using self-compassion approaches. This includes giving yourself a break from self-criticism and being kind towards yourself by acknowledging your feelings. Imagine talking to yourself as you would talk to a dear friend in the same situation.

By incorporating these mindfulness practices, you can gain greater control over your anxiety and begin to live a more peaceful, fulfilling life.
