Mental health is critical to everyone’s overall well-being. Unfortunately, despite the progress made in recent years, it’s still a topic that is often met with stigma and misunderstanding. Many people assume mental health refers to any form of psychiatric illness. However, this is not the case. There are four different types of mental health concerns, each with its own specific symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options.

1. Emotional

First is emotional or affective health. This type of mental health relates to an individual’s emotional state. It encompasses mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. People with emotional health concerns may experience long-lasting periods of extreme sadness, lack of energy, loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed, and increased anxiety or nervousness.

In the United States, over 40 million people are affected by mood disorders, with those affected often experiencing difficulty going about their daily lives. Treatment for emotional mental illness often includes psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of the two.

2. Behavioral

The second type of mental health is behavioral or conduct health. This type of mental health relates to someone’s actions or how they behave. Behavioral health includes disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and addictions, including drug and alcohol addiction.

In contrast to emotional health, behavioral concerns are distinguished by abnormal behaviors that disrupt daily activities and cause social and interpersonal challenges. Treatment methods for behavioral mental illness may include cognitive-behavioral therapy, lifestyle changes, and medication.

3. Intellectual

The third type of mental health is intellectual or cognitive health. This type of mental health relates to an individual’s cognitive ability to think, learn, and reason. Intellectual health is often ascertained using intelligence quotient (IQ) testing and neuropsychological testing.

Intellectual health concerns are diagnosed when people lack problem-solving skills, have difficulty with memory, reasoning, or processing information. Intellectual mental health concerns, like a learning disorder or dementia, often require specialized care to ensure the person can function daily.

4. Psychological

The fourth type of mental health is psychological or social health. Psychological health includes a person’s ability to form relationships, handle stress, and interact effectively with others. This type of mental illness can relate to social factors such as childhood trauma, low self-esteem, cultural adjustment, among others.

People with psychological health concerns experience challenges in social relationships and managing daily stressors. Treatment for psychological health concerns involves interventions such as life coaching, talk therapy, and group therapy.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, everyone must recognize that mental health is much more than a catch-all term for psychiatric illnesses. Instead, there are four critical types of mental health, each deserving specific treatment methods to support individuals experiencing challenges with their cognitive, emotional, behavioral, or social health. Understanding and recognizing why mental health matters are the first steps towards getting the help and support we need to live our fullest lives.
