Get Ready for XLH Awareness Day 2023: Let’s Make a Difference Together!

Introduction

XLH or X-linked hypophosphatemia is a rare genetic disease that affects the bones. The condition is caused by a mutated gene that impairs the body’s ability to absorb phosphorus, leading to a host of bone-related problems. XLH is estimated to affect around 1 in 20,000 people worldwide, and yet remains relatively unknown. This is why XLH Awareness Day was established – to raise awareness about the condition and support those living with it. The next XLH Awareness Day is scheduled for the 25th of June 2023. In this article, we’ll explore how we can best prepare for this day and make a real difference in the lives of those impacted by XLH.

What Is XLH?

As mentioned earlier, XLH is a genetic disorder that affects the bones. Specifically, it causes the bones to become more brittle and prone to fractures. The condition is caused by a mutation in the PHEX gene, which leads to increased levels of a hormone called Fibroblast Growth Factor-23 (FGF23). FGF23 regulates the levels of phosphorus and vitamin D in the body, and when it’s overproduced, it leads to a decrease in these vital nutrients. This can result in rickets (softening of bones in children) or osteomalacia (softening of bones in adults), along with dental problems and muscle weakness.

How Do People Get XLH?

XLH is an X-linked dominant trait. This means it can be passed from a parent to their child, regardless of their gender. If a mother has the mutated PHEX gene, there’s a 50% chance of each of her children inheriting it. If it’s the father who has the condition, there’s a 100% chance of any daughters inheriting it, while sons have a 50% chance of inheriting it.

What Can We Do to Help?

XLH Awareness Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about this rare condition and show support for those who have it. There are several ways we can get involved:

  • Share information about XLH on social media platforms.
  • Organize fundraising events to support research and patient care.
  • Donate directly to XLH-related charities.
  • Volunteer your time to help with local XLH events.
  • Show your support by wearing XLH-related merchandise or clothing.

Last Words

XLH Awareness Day is an important event for those with the condition. It’s a chance to raise awareness and support research and patient care. If you know someone affected by XLH, show them your support and help make a difference. With your help, we can work towards better treatment and, ultimately, a cure for this rare disease.
