How SDSU Student Health Services Helped Me Through College
Going to college can be a wonderful time in life. It’s a time for meeting new friends, gaining knowledge, and building skills for the future. But with all these wonderful benefits, it can also be a time of stress. There are long hours of studying, late nights of worrying, and it’s not uncommon to feel lonely or overwhelmed. That’s where SDSU Student Health Services comes in. Let’s explore how they helped me through college.
Introduction
College is a time of excitement, self-discovery, and growth, but it can also present a unique set of challenges. When I started college, I was excited to be studying in a field that had always fascinated me. But it wasn’t long before I started to feel overwhelmed and anxious – the pressure of deadlines, the time commitment of studying, and the challenges of balancing work and school were beginning to take a toll on me. Fortunately, I discovered SDSU Student Health Services, which provided me with the support and resources I needed to get through college.
What is SDSU Student Health Services?
SDSU Student Health Services (SHS) is a comprehensive healthcare organization that provides medical, counseling, wellness, and health promotion services to the San Diego State University community. It is staffed by licensed and certified healthcare professionals who are dedicated to the wellbeing of SDSU students. SHS offers a wide range of services, including medical care, mental health counseling, health education, and health promotion.
Medical Care
One of the most valuable services offered by SHS is medical care. As a student, I didn’t have health insurance, and I didn’t have the financial resources to pay for medical care on my own. SHS provided me with low-cost medical services, including routine check-ups, lab tests, and referrals to specialists as needed. I was able to get the medical care I needed to stay healthy, without having to worry about the cost.
Mental Health Counseling
As the workload and stress of college began to take a toll on my mental health, I turned to SHS for support. The counseling services provided by SHS were a game-changer for me. I was able to meet with a licensed mental health professional, and we worked together to develop coping strategies and manage my stress. I found that having someone to talk to about my struggles was incredibly helpful, and the support I received helped me make it through some of the toughest times in college.
Health Education
In addition to healthcare services, SHS also offers health education programs that aim to promote healthy living among SDSU students. These programs cover topics like nutrition, physical activity, stress management, and sexual health. I found that attending these programs was incredibly helpful in learning how to take care of myself and manage my stress. By following the advice of the SHS health educators, I was able to improve my overall health and wellbeing.
Health Promotion
Another valuable service provided by SHS is health promotion. SHS hosts a variety of events, activities, and initiatives throughout the year that aim to promote healthy lifestyle choices and raise awareness about health-related issues. One of my favorite events was the SDSU Farmers’ Market. It was a great opportunity to buy fresh, healthy produce, and learn about sustainable living.
Conclusion
As I look back on my college experience, I realize that it could have been much more challenging without the support of SDSU Student Health Services. SHS was there for me when I needed medical care, mental health counseling, and advice on healthy living. They provided me with the support and resources I needed to succeed in college. I encourage all SDSU students to make use of the services provided by SHS – they can make all the difference in your college experience.
