My Experience as an Acumen West Africa Fellow: Transformative, Inspiring and Life-changing
As humans, we are always looking for ways to impact our communities positively. One of the most impactful ways we can do this is by investing in the growth and development of ourselves and others. This was precisely what I set out to do when I applied for the Acumen West Africa Fellowship, and my experience was truly transformative, inspiring, and life-changing.
The Acumen West Africa Fellowship is aimed at supporting young leaders in their quest to create positive change in their communities. Over a period of months, Fellows are taken through a rigorous, immersive leadership experience that equips them with the necessary skills and knowledge to lead effectively and sustainably.
The fellowship was an incredible opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who were equally passionate about transforming their communities. I got to engage with people from diverse backgrounds, each with unique perspectives and experiences. Through these interactions, I learned to appreciate the beauty in diversity and gained invaluable insights into the challenges faced by different communities.
One of the most transformative experiences during the fellowship was the social immersion phase. During this phase, Fellows are placed in challenging environments that allow them to gain a deeper understanding of the problems faced by the communities they aspire to serve. I was placed in a rural community in Ghana and had the opportunity to witness firsthand the challenges faced by people living in rural areas. This experience provided me with a new perspective on development and the importance of investing in sustainable, community-led initiatives.
Throughout the fellowship, I was also exposed to a range of experts and thought leaders who shared their knowledge and expertise with us. I gained insights into topics such as design thinking, systems thinking, and lean methodology, all of which have been instrumental in shaping my approach to problem-solving and leadership.
The fellowship also equipped me with essential skills such as public speaking, project management, and communication. These skills have been invaluable in my personal and professional life, helping me to lead effectively and make a positive impact in my community.
In conclusion, my experience as an Acumen West Africa Fellow was truly transformative, inspiring, and life-changing. It provided me with a unique opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, gain insights into diverse perspectives, and contribute to sustainable development initiatives. I would highly recommend the fellowship to anyone looking to invest in their personal and professional growth, make a positive impact in their community, or gain a new perspective on development and leadership.
