Art is often considered an extracurricular activity within education. There is a common belief that art is not necessary, and it oftentimes is one of the first programs cut when budget cuts are made. This belief though, is not true.

Art provides students with a multitude of benefits that help them both inside and outside of the classroom. It sparks creativity and imagination in children, as well as enhances their cognitive and motor skills. It is a way for students of all ages to express themselves in a way not many other subjects can provide.

Art, whether it be through music, painting, drawing, or any other medium, teaches children who maybe struggle with more traditional subjects that their voice matters. It teaches children that they are capable of completing or creating something that others may admire. In an age where children are taught to be independent thinkers and to bring new ideas to light, art is an ideal way to develop these skills.

Additionally, art supplements subjects such as English and history, bringing the topics to life in a way that causes students to care more about them. The art we create can convey emotion, tell a story, or paint a picture of the time and place in which they were relevant. Art, in the classroom, teaches history in a way that textbooks cannot compete with.

Lastly, having art in schools helps to develop communities. Art programs promote unity and collaboration between students and teachers alike. They help to foster a sense that schools are not just places where lessons are taught, but where ideas can be shared, and creativity is encouraged.

Art plays a vital role in education, and it is unfortunate that it is often overlooked. It provides children with opportunities to develop their skills, learn about history and culture, and create strong relationships that last throughout their educational journey. It is important that we continue to support art in schools and help future generations of students become well-rounded individuals.
