As universities strive to provide students with more than just a degree, wellness has become a priority on many campuses across the nation. The University of Chicago (UChicago) is no exception as it adopts a campus-wide approach to health and wellbeing. With the knowledge that wellness of the mind, body, and soul is important for academic and personal success, UChicago has implemented a holistic approach to student wellness.

At UChicago, wellness is a campus-wide initiative that involves the collaboration of numerous departments. The Campus and Student Life (CSL) department, Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS), and the Office of Health Promotion and Wellness (HPW) work together towards the goal of promoting overall wellness for all students.

One of the many initiatives that UChicago has implemented is the Peer Health Exchange (PHE) program. This program connects UChicago students with high school students to provide them with workshops and activities that promote healthy decision-making, communication, and leadership skills. The program also creates a safe space for students to discuss topics such as emotional health, sexual health, and substance use.

Additionally, UChicago has implemented the My SSP program which offers students 24/7 counseling and mental health support. Students can access the program through an app or by calling a hotline and they can have confidential conversations with a qualified mental health professional in multiple languages.

UChicago has also created a Wellness Center that provides students with the opportunity to participate in activities such as yoga, Pilates, meditation, and dance. The center also hosts workshops that address topics such as sleep, nutrition, and stress management.

UChicago understands that student wellness extends beyond the campus and has implemented partnerships with local organizations to offer students more resources. For example, UChicago has worked with the South Side YMCA to provide students with discounted memberships and access to the facility’s amenities.

In conclusion, UChicago has demonstrated its commitment to promoting wellness throughout its campus. From the PHE program to the My SSP program and the Wellness Center, UChicago provides students with numerous opportunities to prioritize their health and wellbeing. By adopting a holistic approach to student wellness and partnering with outside organizations, UChicago demonstrates its understanding of the importance of wellness in academic and personal success.
