The fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are critical in today’s world, shaping many aspects of modern life. However, women and minorities such as Hispanics, African Americans, and Native Americans are underrepresented in STEM.

There are several reasons why we continue to see a lack of diversity in STEM fields. One major factor is the lack of mentors and role models. Women and minorities are less likely to have access to mentors who can help them navigate the early stages of their STEM education or teach them how to network within their chosen field.

Additionally, implicit bias can also play a significant role in women and minorities being underrepresented in STEM. Teachers and counselors may not encourage female or minority students as much as their male or white counterparts to pursue STEM careers. This implicit bias can be both intentional and unintentional.

Another factor is the lack of access to resources. Women and minorities have less access to science and engineering resources, including computers, libraries, and other technology that can help them in their studies. Without access to these resources, they are more likely to fall behind in their studies and be discouraged from continuing in STEM fields.

Finally, many women and minorities may choose to pursue careers in other fields simply because they are not aware of the opportunities available in STEM. Even when they are aware of the field, they may not have the same level of exposure and experience as their peers, putting them at a disadvantage.

Breaking down these barriers and creating a more diverse STEM workforce will require addressing the root causes of underrepresentation. This includes increasing access to resources, mentorship, and role models, as well as combating implicit bias at all levels. Only then can we begin to see true equity and increased representation in STEM.
