Holidays are a universal phenomenon; it’s an annual event that brings joy to people around the world. Holidays are an opportunity to celebrate and honor tradition, and customs that are unique to different cultures. It’s a time to gather together with family and friends and share in the beauty of a season.

From Africa to America to Asia, every society and culture has its own distinct set of holidays and customs that reflect the values, beliefs, and traditions of that particular region. These holidays and customs create a rich tapestry of diversity that is the hallmark of our global community.

For example, Christmas, celebrated on 25th December every year, in countries like the UK, USA and many parts of Europe is a Christian holiday, which is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. In Japan, Christmas is not a religious holiday; instead, it is an occasion to spread joy and happiness and to indulge in eating Christmas cakes and KFC fried chicken famously associated with the holiday.

Another example would be Diwali, which is a Hindu festival of lights celebrated in India, Fiji, and parts of the Caribbean. The five-day festival celebrates the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and wisdom over ignorance. The festival is marked by lighting of lamps, fireworks, feasting, and exchanging gifts.

At the same time, Eid Al-Fitr is a significant Islamic holiday that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. The holiday is celebrated in Muslim-majority countries around the world and in areas with significant Muslim populations. It’s a time for prayer, fasting, and feasting with family and friends.

These are but a few examples of how holidays and customs play a vital role in our lives; they bring us together and connect us to our roots. By celebrating them, we are creating memories and affirming the unique identities that make up our global community. So do take time and pause to appreciate holidays and customs around the world, embrace them and honor the traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation.
